Principal's Message Welcome to Rosewood, a vibrant, 85-year-old elementary school with a fine tradition in downtown Columbia, South Carolina. Near the campus of the University of South Carolina and the State Capitol Complex, Rosewood serves a diverse population of families who choose to live “downtown” with all of the cultural urban amenities that our central city has to offer.
We think of our school as a progressive, secular, humanistic, urban educational institution, where we work hard to ensure that relations among students, staff, parents, and administration are as democratic and egalitarian as possible. Our curriculum focuses on traditional academics, respect and nurturance toward our environment, and the peaceful resolution of conflict at our school and in our world.
Rosewood is one of the highest achieving schools in a school district of approximately 23,000 students. We have won numerous awards in recent years for the academic achievement of all of our students.
Rosewood’s student population has remained remarkably stable over the past 30 years. This year’s total enrollment and demographic characteristics are identical to what they were in 1976, the year I became principal. Our school serves approximately 385 students; 65% are white and 35% are minority. Approximately 40% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch. Approximately one fourth of our students attend Rosewood on a district-approved transfer.
Although our students perform well on standardized tests, it would be a mistake to think of our school’s culture as test-driven. Rosewood students enjoy a minimum of 20 to 25 minutes of daily recess, weekly classes in music, art, physical education, and foreign language. Field trips, assemblies, class parties, and fun are also part of their regular school experience.
Because Rosewood is a relatively small school, everyone seems to know everyone else. Many of our parents who work downtown drop by quite often to have lunch with their children, observe in their children’s classrooms, or volunteer their time. We are fortunate to have various parent organizations that are active at our school in numerous ways.
I encourage prospective parents to schedule a visit to Rosewood so I can give you a tour and talk with you about your child and our school.
Do drop by and check us out!
